Why we're drinking this
We’re suckers for good Chianti, and the Riserva Ducale is one of Tuscany’s iconic brands. It’s got one of those labels that’s immediately familiar. Well, it’s been around since 1929, so that makes sense. This wine is designated “Classico,” meaning it’s made from grapes grown in the premium vineyards from the heart of the Chianti region. It’s also DOCG, which means it meets the highest level of criteria set out by the authorities. The “G” stands for “garantita.” And it’s also a “Riserva,” meaning it’s aged for 24 months (at least) in oak barrels.
Tasting note
This is textbook Chianti, with bright red cherry on the nose and the characteristic dustiness of Sangiovese, of which this wine contains 80 percent. The rest is Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is the kind of food-friendly wine we love, with its bright acidity, fresh berries and savoury, cedar quality. The tannins are present, but soft and ripe. The finish is quite long, complex, spicy. There’s elegance here—classy stuff.
