Why we're drinking this
It’s hard enough to find a half decent Pinot Noir for under $20. Finding a decent Burgundy at that price is even harder. Surprise! This Albert Bichot Bourgogne is pretty darned good and it’s under 15 bucks (on sale). Bichot is a very large concern with several estates scattered throughout Burgundy. They’ve been in the wine business since 1831 and are still family business. They make wines ranging from easy-drinking light little numbers like this one, all the way up to the Grand Crus costing hundreds of dollars.
Tasting note
Make no mistake, this is a very light wine. It’s light in body, alcohol and tannins. This doesn’t mean it isn’t good—quite the contrary. But it does require some attention. It’s complexities are subtle. It’s perfumed with fresh-picked raspberries and red cherries and has just a hint of characteristic Burgundian funk, that earthy, almost barnyard quality that fans of Burgundy love so much. This is a very pretty wine, easy-drinking and quite rewarding. Definitely quaffable and accessibly priced.
