Why we're drinking this
Blended wines are kind of hip right now, but that’s not the only reason we’re drinking this one. Honestly, there was a time when we shied away from Cali Chards because so many of them were big, buttery and blustery, with little finesse and too much sweet oak. Well, this wine ain’t that. It’s a very nice, polite wine with restraint, balance and charm. It should win Chardonnay lovers back to the California dream. It’s also a stellar food wine.
Tasting note
Don’t let anyone compare this wine to a Chardonnay from Burgundy. People will be tempted to do so, because it’s more demure than the usual U-S-A wines. But it’s still pure California sunshine, with super ripe yellow apple flesh, pear and a hint of apricot. There’s some citrus zing in there too. It’s lovely with food because it’s got nice acidity and smooth, well-balanced oak. These two elements give it structure and help freshen up the palate between bites. Try a nice hot soup, and enjoy a cool crisp shock of wine between slurps. Nice on a wintry eve.
