Why we're drinking this
We love the wines from the Fowles family. They make a Syrah from the Straghbogie Ranges—the same region as this wine—called Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch, and it’s fabulous. At $35, it better be. These wines are unlike many commercial Australian wines in that they exhibit a modicum of restraint and elegance, which seems to be where Aussie wines are going these days. And that’s a good thing. Noted wine critic James Halliday rated this Cabernet Sauvignon a stunning 95 points, calling it “vibrantly fresh and elegant.”
Tasting note
What a beautiful nose! Fragrant and perfumed with blackberry, violets, black licorice, cassis, red currants and blueberry. On the palate, you’ll get the same, with bright, fresh acidity and a whiff of smoke and sweet oak notes. But it’s really all about the berries, and a nice jab of pepper. The medium finish is more elemental, as the berries drop away and a nice earthy, flintiness comes on. Tannins are present, but smooth—and they will help this wine cellar for a good three or four years. This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinct Aussie character. Really quite impressive, and good value even at full price.
