Why we're drinking this
While Sauvignon Blanc can be a challenging wine for some, we find it an essential style to have on hand at all times. For some, it’s overwhelming with fragrant citrus and tropical fruits and an herbaceous quality that can be off-putting if you don’t like the smell of canned peas and asparagus. But good Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect hot summer patio wine, served bracingly cold, as those fruity elements can really capture the scents of the great outdoors. We like Sauvignon Blanc purely because it’s so wild and bold—and it’s a great food wine too. This Monkey Bay wine comes from Marlborough in New Zealand, one of the world’s top producers of Sauvignon Blanc. New Zealand has a certain style, which is quite simply “big.” You want flavour, you’ve got flavour.
Tasting note
Fresh and clean aromas burst from the glass, with grapefruit, lime, kiwi and green apple at the fore, with a bit of pineapple too. There’s just a hint of that herbaceous character, a little canned green pea and asparagus in the background. These savoury elements make this wine a perfect match with grilled vegetables, asparagus and risotto, or herbed flat bread. (Be creative!). In the mouth, this wine has a nice texture, almost a honey-like presence. The acidity is elevated, but not overly so. It’s got a nice, medium-long finish. The wine is balanced, clean and delicious. Plus, at just 12% alcohol, it’s light and easy. A great summer kwäffer for your warm-weather thirst-quenching needs.
