Why we're drinking this
This is a fun little wine. It’s entirely unique and it tastes great too. Ironstone is a well-known California winery and pretty much the only significant producer of the Symphony grape, which was created at the University of California at Davis in 1948. It’s a cross between Muscat of Alexandria and Grenache Gris. Though it’s very expressive and fruity, it finishes nice and crisp and is low in alcohol. Delightful on a hot day.
Tasting note
Symphony is known as an aromatic grape. It’s very fragrant and perfumed as it wafts from the glass. But it’s not cloying. Though it is off-dry (therefore a bit sweet), it has a zesty quality. It’s balanced by just enough acidity to give it a lift. This has “patio season” written all over it. You’ll get lovely mango and melon aromas, with citrus, ginger and purple flowers. It tastes just as tropical. This might be off-putting to those who prefer their white wines on the more reserved side. But if you’re looking for a partier, this is it!
