Why we're drinking this
Rioja is the region and Tempranillo is the grape. Everyone likes Tempranillo. It’s a grape that does everything well. And in Rioja, the grape makes delicious wines across many styles and price points. Young un-oaked (or lightly oaked) wines are juicy and fruity while aged versions (Crianza and Riserva) are deeper, complex and smoky. This “Elaboracion Especiale” gets eight months of ageing in new oak, so it’s certainly woody. This is a consistent and perennial favourite at the LCBO. We like it too.
Tasting note
This is a chunky but fruity wine, a tad rustic — with noticeable wood and gritty tannins — but it all works together well. It’s a dry, herbaceous wine, a bit more than medium in body, with warming 14% alcohol. Macho types will like to sip it, but it’s really made for bloody meats, rich dishes and bold flavours. Good with charcuterie and grilled (smoky) meats and veg. It’ll like hard cheese too. A seriously good wine for the price.
