Why we're drinking this
Chapoutier is one of our mad crush wineries. They are best known as a producer of classic and modern southern Rhone wines, the region where they are located—and have been since 1808. This wine, Marius by Michel Chapoutier, comes from the southern France region of Pays d’Oc, aka Languedoc-Roussillon, closer to the Spanish border. It is the single biggest wine producing region in the world, and so you might know it better for producing a fair amount of plonk. But good stuff comes from here too. Witness: Marius. It’s a blend of Grenache and Syrah.
Tasting note
Deep ruby-purple in the glass, a young concentrated wine. Brimming with spicy-sweet plum, black currant, licorice and herbal tones. The latter are often attributed to garrigue, fragrant herbs and bushes that grow there. The wine is supple, slightly peppery deeply concentrated and rich. It has a wild quality to it too, which might mellow out with some time. Tremendous value in a warming red wine for fall and winter.
