Who doesn't love to get first access to the latest and greatest? Opening to the public later this summer, Niagara-on-the-Lake’s newest premium winery is launching with a bang-up trio of wines Ontario does best—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rosé—and a team of people who are deeply rooted in Ontario's wine history. Rated at 90 points, the grapes for these wines are all sourced from a renowned vineyard perched on the St. David’s Bench in one of Niagara’s warmest appellations. They showcase the unique terroir of the region and the finessed winemaking of veteran Ontario winemaker Rob Power.
2016 Chardonnay
If you like your Chards big, then this is your true love. No surprise, given a stellar 2016 vintage that saw beautiful sunny weather prevail right into harvest, which went as late as November 20. You can drink that sunshine right now in this full-bodied white. Though it’s big and rich, it has considerable finesse and elegance. The alcohol level is quite restrained at 13%, meaning this wine will not overpower your food. The epic fruit flavours will complement a wide range of dishes… as well as a sipping session in the backyard.
Tastes Like: Ripe apple, peach and melon, with a hint of citrus and lemon meringue. Lots of buttery goodness and some savoury, sweet spice. Voluptuous, opulent, irresistible.
2016 Pinot Noir
Here’s a Pinot Noir with some serious things to say. It’s got the elegance and fruitiness we know and love in Ontario Pinot (dare we say a Burgundian stylishness) but it’s also quite forceful and structured. If we want to geek out, we could say it has the qualities of Pommard, the region of Burgundy famous for wines of power and presence. This wine is drinking well now, but could easily sit a few years and still come out swinging.
Tastes Like: A fruit bowl of delicious, with bing cherry, raspberry, strawberry and red currant jam balanced with beautiful savoury (herb) and gamey undertones. Think of those savoury qualities when going for a food match.
2017 Pinot Noir Rosé
It’s not only the ultimate summer patio wine, rosé really is the ultimate food wine. Fresh and fruity, easy drinking, bright and lively and, especially, lower in alcohol — that’s what you want in a food wine. This rosé is made with 100% Pinot Noir, another reason it’s so perfect with food. Chill it, but don’t freeze it. Those fruit notes get shy when it’s too cold. This is a fun wine.
Tastes Like: A bowl of berries — strawberry, cherry and raspberry — along with crab apple and a hint of tropical fruit.
