Why we're drinking thisAs kwäf Taste Bud Lindsay Groves says: "If you're not already drinking Ontario Pinot Noir, it's time to wake up!" This is a cool-climate loving grape that Ontario wineries do very well with — that is, the ones who are willing to put in the effort and considerable care required to bring this fickle variety to its greatest heights. They don't call it "the heartbreak grape" for nothing. Malivoire winemaker Shiraz Mottiar wears his heart on his sleeve with this beauty of a wine. Fifty-five percent of the fruit came from his personal vineyard, with the balance coming from the Moira Vineyard on the Malivoire estate. The wine was fermented in oak cuvées, then transferred to oak barrels for 18 months of ageing. The 2012 has spent over a year in bottle, achieving a wonderful level of integration and a supple texture. It’s ready now, but will do pretty neat things over the next few years.
Tasting NoteSuperbly juicy fruit flavours (black and red berries, pomegranate, blueberry) jump from this wine, but it’s the subtleties that make you pay attention. You’ll notice the texture right away: supple, velvety. Savour this for a bit, then put your attention to the more exotic, savoury notes of dried herbs, forest floor and dried rose petal. A bit geeky, yes, but worth pointing out. There’s so much going on with this wine, you just have to try for yourself. It has zippy acidity, perfectly in balance with the ripe fruit. A delightful wine with a finish that goes on and on. Till the next bottle…
