Big, bold and full of finesse — 91 points!
Tastes like
A powerhouse of black and red berries, intense and focused, yet elegant. Supple in the mouth, with complex fruit and savoury finish.
Drink with
Good companions — the ones you really, really like. Also goes well with Thanksgiving feasts of birds and roasts, root vegetables and savoury stuffings. Don’t shy away from fatty stuff — this wine thrives on fatty stuff. Pass the butter.
Good for
Your holiday-feasting table, from Thanksgiving to Christmas (and beyond).
Why we're drinking this
We’re not one to fall in love with award winners just because they are award winners. In fact, we tasted this wine in pure ignorance — and loved it — only to learn later that it the previous year’s vintage (2012) took Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships and received an Honours award at Intervin. OK, now forget all that. This wine is the 2013 vintage, an entirely different beast. Or is it? It has the same elegance and finesse, the same character and poise. This is the flagship wine from Niagara’s Rosewood Estates, after all. The 2013 was a warm vintage, bringing the fruit to voluptuous ripeness. This blend of predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, is a formidable yet graceful wine. It’s most assuredly a food wine, with the structure and complexity to stand up to a long harvest feast. Perfect for Thanksgiving — it’ll make your turkey sing. (Results may vary.)
Tasting Note
Sommelier Zoltan Szabo describes the wine as medium- to full-weight with bright and spicy cranberry and oak spice and savory nuances of pan-fried bacon and wet graphite. “I really like its inner-mouth florality and round texture,” he says, noting its soft tannins. “Yet another damn good wine brought to us by the lovely people at Rosewood.” Wine expert Dick Snyder calls it generous, deep and complex. “Big fruit flavours, red and black berries, plum and black cherry and a slightly smoky finish carrying bitter chocolate and coffee.” Both wine experts rate this wine at 91 points. Drinking well now, it’s still showing youthful exuberance with lots of generous ripe fruit. A lovely savoury quality will make it a perfect match with your Thanksgiving feast. Don’t shy away from fatty foods (unless your doctor said so).
