Why we're drinking this With the new school year in full swing, we bring you a mix of wines perfect for mid-week meals and a couple special bottles you’ll want to save for the Holidays (or another special occasion). Whatever and whoever you pour these wines with, we hope you find them as fun and unique as we do— they’re the best companions for holding onto the last fading memories of summer and for taking on the coming holiday season (gasp!) with gusto. Each wine has been finely crafted and selected by the Taste Buds to complement all those perfect Fall moments- so sit back and enjoy.
Domain Queylus 2013 Cabernet Franc Tradition: At once savoury and fresh, really good Cabernet Franc is another one of those bracing wines that makes us love the fall all the more. We do great Cabernet Franc here in Ontario, perhaps due in part to our climatic and geographical affinities with the Loire region of France, where Cab Franc is a shining star. Hand picking, natural yeasts, gentle handling and long ageing in new and old oak barrels — the result is a glorious wine, one of the best Ontario Cabernet Francs the kwäf taste Buds have tasted.Tastes like: The essence of Cabernet Franc, namely pure black, blue and red berries, a touch of plum and savoury herbs and spice. Just a hint of warming oak. Exquisite!
Rosewood 2013 Pinot Noir: For fall, Pinot is one of our favourites. It just nicely encapsulates the tonality of all that surrounds us: the colourful foliage, the dusty (or damp) earth, the savoury breezes. They say Pinot Noir expresses the land — terroir — like no other grape. The grapes come from three vineyards on the Niagara Escarpment, each with its own soil and micro-climate. Gentle ageing in seasoned oak barrels means the wood expression is kept in check, allowing this delicate wine to just be itself — a very pretty, gentle, silky Pinot.Tastes like: Juicy fresh and dried fruit (raspberry, red cherry, strawberry jam), with pretty earth and dried floral notes. Sweetly and gently spiced.
Thirty Bench 'Steel Post Vineyard' 2014 Small Lot Riesling: The good folks at Thirty Bench are masters with Riesling, and this is one of their best. This wine floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. It has that gossamer quality of great Riesling—aromatic and fresh like a cool breeze, bursting with exotic fruit. But it’s also an intense wine; formidable, firm and steely, with that tongue-smacking quality that heralds brilliant acidity.Tastes like: Pure and clean apple, citrus and exotic fruit, with lots of lime, honey, florality and wet stones (that lovely slate feeling!). Slight residual sugar adds a touch of sweet.
